Long Island Water Quality: Many Issues and One Clear Solution

Long Island Water Quality

Posted : March 15,2016

Long Island water quality has long been a source of pride for local residents and businesses. Our deep aquifers are filled with fresh, clean glacial water. This inheritance, however, is in danger.

Along with the Flint water crisis, Long Island water pollution has become a focal point in the national struggle for water quality. In a speech announcing a $6 million study on Long Island water quality, Governor Cuomo highlighted the three key environmental issues on Long Island:

• A one-by-three mile wide underground plume left by Northrup Grumman in Nassau County
• Runoff from the 65 mulching facilities on Long Island
• Saltwater intrusion

In addition to these groundwater concerns, Long Island Sound water quality is being threatened by nitrogen pollution. It’s clear is that chemical contamination, over-pumped aquifers, and sewage runoff are the main culprits of Long Island pollution, but what can we do about it?

In recent years, New York officials have taken huge steps toward solving the environmental issues on Long Island, and so has AWWT. Our approach to advanced waste services is friendly to the environment and convenient for businesses looking to reduce the cost of wastewater disposal.
